ADVOCATES FOR THE RURAL CRESCENT
RURAL PRESERVATION ALLIANCE
VOTERS TO STOP SPRAWL

PRESS RELEASE MAY 28, 2003

CITIZENS CALL FOR CANDOR
ON RURAL CRESCENT COMMITMENTS
AND THE SOUTH MARKET DEVELOPMENT PROPOSAL

The Rural Crescent Alliance, Advocates for the Rural Crescent, and Votes to Stop Sprawl will be holding a joint press conference on May 30th, 4:00 p.m. at the Greater South Market site to announce the names of those candidates for the Prince William County Board of Supervisors who have pledged to maintain the Rural Crescent's boundaries.

The Board of Supervisor's recent action delaying a vote on Greater South Market, a complex with 720 age-restricted homes, 525 non-age-restricted houses and an office park, caused many to question the smart growth position of the candidates for the Prince William Board of Supervisors.

Indeed, Prince William communities have publicly said they regard the deferral of the South Market vote as a political ploy intended to allow incumbent candidates in the upcoming primary election an opportunity to avoid approving a development proposal to change the boundaries to the Rural Crescent. These incumbent candidates are: Sean Connaughton, Chairman At Large; Mary Hill, Coles District; Hilda Barg, Woodbridge District

The ARC, RPA and VSS offer these incumbent candidates the opportunity to demonstrate to citizens their support for maintaining the boundaries of the Rural Crescent by signing a pledge promising they vote for no development proposal that would (1) change the Rural Crescent boundary, resulting in a decrease to the total number of acres included in this shielded area, and/or (2) allow public sewer to intrude into the Rural Crescent.

The ARC, RPA and VSS have submitted a formal request for this commitment to these incumbent candidates and will publicize their responses on May 30th. Names of other candidates who have made that commitment will be publicized at that meeting.

Long-term commitment to the goals established with the adoption of Prince William's Comprehensive Plan is of primary concern to Prince William citizens. It is the ARC, RPA, and VSS's position that those who wish to lead Prince William County will be open with their position on this issue and let those voting know where they stand.
